1088 Suicides :Farmer Suicides in Maharashtra Rise in 2023, Government Provides Compensation(Rs 1lakh)

Farmer suicides has reached the number of 1088, as per the record. Compensation of Rs 1 lakh had been paid out for eligible farmers.

According to a report from the Marathwada divisional commissioner’s office, 1,088 farmers committed suicide in eight districts within the Maharashtra area in 2023, PTI said. This exceeds the number of recorded fatalities from 2022 by 65.

“Of the 1,088 suicides in 2023, Beed recorded the highest 269 such deaths, followed by 182 in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 175 in Nanded, 171 in Dharashiv and 103 in Parbhani,” according to the research. Jalna reported 74  while , Latur and Hingoli reported 72 and 42 such deaths respectively.

The news agency was informed by an official that the relatives of the deceased have been given compensation of Rs 1 lakh apiece. PTI said, “Of the 1,088 cases, 777 qualified for ex-gratia, which has been paid out, and 151 cases are presently being investigated.”

An average of 30 farmers have died by suicide per day across the country, since 2014, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

Farmers in India faced a long winter as a result of declining public investments, the privatization of important industries, the opening of the country to outside trade, a decline in state subsidies, and a reduction in formal agricultural credit. These factors made it more difficult for Indian farmers to compete with the heavily subsidized imports. In The Wire, Anirban Bhattacharya, Nancy Pathak, and Pranay Raj wrote.

The source stated that once the government looked into every single case, ₹ 1 lakh in compensation was provided to the family in situations that qualified. He noted that of the 1,088 instances, 777 qualified for compensation, which has been paid out, and 151 are still being investigated.
