WHEAT SOWING LEADS TO INCREASED IN PRODUCTION THIS YEAR SAYS ARJUN MUNDA
The total area for sowing has crossed the physiological benchmark of 34 million hectares, according to the agriculture ministry data released on January 19 2024. The total area of sowing pulses and other remains lower.
The pulses sowing such as gram, urad, and moong covers the total area of 15.51 million hectares area 2023-24, down from 16.26 million hectares in the previous year.
Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda expressed hope that production is expected to be good this year due to higher coverage. “According to the sowing data, wheat has been covered in more areas and we expect good production this year,” Munda stated to PTI.
In the rabi season 2023, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab has been the top wheat-sowing states generating high wheat production. The Punjab and Haryana are seen to be covering the 70% area of total wheat area sowing the climate resistant seeds.
Skymet, a private weather forecasting firm, predicts a regular southwest monsoon in 2024 and a neutral phase for El Niño beginning in March. The Indian monsoon season may see an emerging La Niña throughout the second part of June to September. Both possibilities are regarded beneficial.
