10 dead, 40 injured in train accidents in India

Ten people were killed and 40 others injured, 15 of them seriously, in three accidents involving five passenger trains in Uttar Pradesh amid dense fog and near zero visibility conditions early on Saturday 2 January 2010.

In this accident (train number 2556) Bhiwani-Gorakhpur Gorakhdham Express crashed into the stationary (train number 2418) Prayagraj Express. The place of accident at Panki near Kanpur on the North-Central Railway (NCR) in Uttar Pradesh. On 2nd January 2010 in thick fog that had enveloped many parts of north India.

The accident took place when the two trains coming from Delhi. Both of trains were on the same track. Though fog appeared to be the reason of this accident. The Delhi-Allahabad Prayagraj Express was at the station, When the Gorakhdham Express hit it from behind in dense fog. The time of this accident while Gorakhdham Express hit Prayagraj Express at around 9 a.m.

The guard of Prayagraj Express was killed in the accident. BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who was travelling to Allahabad on the Prayagraj Express, was unhurt. Congress MP Bahraich Kamal Kishore and his wife Poonam Kishore were also travelling in the Gorakhdham Express.

A railway spokesman said that a team of railway officials is at the accident spot in Panki with rescue efforts. He said Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed that rescue operations be expedited.
